Exploring Program helps youth bring future into focus

Elizabeth Holman completed her first year in Blanchard Valley Health Systems Medical Exploring program.  When she was younger Elizabeth always knew she wanted to be in the medical field.  Being able to help people is her true calling.  In the beginning she was leaning toward Physician Assistant, which she is still focused on.  “You need to figure out what you want to do and follow your passion.”

In the BVHS Exploring program she really enjoyed the meeting about the emergency room.  “Just seeing the instant need and fast passed atmosphere is so fascinating.”

One meeting they used Petri dishes and really engaged in hands-on experiences learning about biology.  During another meeting they also got a tour of the open-heart lab. “It was great refreshing up on CPR skills.”  Following in her fathers and older brothers’ footsteps in high school being a lifeguard. Elizabeth is also first-year lifeguard at the Canterbury Swim Club.

This summer Elizabeth is busy playing high school golf.  Her team plays all over Northwest Ohio.  Her home course is Sycamore springs golf course. Elizabeth is also a sophomore on the Findlay High School varsity golf team.  She really enjoys golf and the competitive mindset it brings.  You can never have a perfect day on the course, and she strides to get better during each practice and match.

“I am pretty lucky being able to play and have competitive matches in this COVID environment.  Some activities and sports may not happen this school year.  I’m grateful I can still be out there with the team.”

Elizabeth started playing competitive golf her freshman year and is now a sophomore. Their home course is Sycamore Springs Golf Club and they have tournaments across Northwest Ohio.

The Holman family are an Exploring Family.  Her older brother Nick was also an Explorer in the City of Findlay Aviation program.  He recently soloed for the first time in an airplane with BGSU flight school and finished his cross-country flight to South Bend Indiana.  Nick is on the path to becoming in the aviation industry and on his way to his pilot’s license with BGSU.

In the next five years Elizabeth envisions herself playing college golf.  Particularly a division one school would be her goal.  While focusing her undergraduate degree in classes to get her closer to becoming a Physician Assistant.
