Ronnie Kimmey Receives Honor Award

The Honor Medal is awarded to a youth or adult Scout “who has demonstrated unusual heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness in saving or attempting to save a life with risk to self.” The BSA website lists 2,354 Honor Medals have been presented since 1924, making this one of the rarest awards presented.

After Troop 35, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church, Van Wert, OH setup camp at East Fork River, near Durban, West Virginia, several scouts asked the scoutmaster if they could go swimming. Several scouts floated downstream to some shallow rapids. Two scouts went back to camp before they got to the rapids. Ronnie Kimmey of Troop 35, and serval older scouts floated down to the deeper part of the rapids. Ronnie stayed close to Nick Foster as he was unsure of Nick's swimming ability. Nick was caught up in the rapids and was calling for help. Ronnie told Nick to float on his back. As Ronnie reached Nick, Nick panicked and pulled both he and Ronnie under the water. Ronnie, using his lifesaving skills, gripped Nick by the ankle and pulled him toward shallow water. Both rested on the shoreline before returning to their campsite.

For Ronnie Kimmey’s heroic actions, with risk to himself, the National Council of the Boy Scout of America awarded Ronnie with the Honor Medal on June 24, 2016 at Camp Lakota.
