Troop 97
Chartered to American Legion in Maria Stein

Troop 97 is a boys’ Scouts BSA Troop chartered to the American Legion in Maria Stein but drawing in scouts from across the Marion Local school district.

Troop 97 is a troop that likes to put the “outing” in “Scouting.” While doing frequent campouts, the troop also likes to mix in more varied trips. Some of the troop’s favorite trips include an annual “Bushwhack Hike” to Clifton Gorge in November, during which last year, the scouts to the opportunity to pack lightweight stoves and cook for themselves on the trail, and a recent canoe trip where they went on the Great Miami River for a 5 mile trip downstream. During this canoe trip, as with their previous hike, they came prepared with all of the materials to make their own dinners once they landed. Troop 97 is looking into doing more, cool outings including the Nuclear Science merit badge weekend at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station and a possible backpacking trip structured like a trip to Philmont but done locally.

The troop, chartered in Maria Stein and regularly welcoming scouts from across the Marion Local school district, is happy to support their area through various service projects. A unique opportunity that Troop 97 has is helping out at the Catholic Church’s Shrine of Holy Relics in Maria Stein. Troop 97 regularly volunteers in several capacities at the Shrine and they enjoy occasionally camping on the Shrine’s grounds as well.

Through the coronavirus quarantine, Troop 97 has adapted by moving Boards of Review online through Zoom and with several scouts taking online merit badges. They’re excited to restart their activities this month and plan to camp together at the Shrine while scouts participate in our council’s “CyberSwamp” virtual merit badge classes.
