GREAT OAKS

FOS Presentation Dates Needed

We are scheduling group dates for FOS presentations to share the Scouting story and the important reasons for this one-time ask for support of Scouting. Please call Doug Ditto at 419.303.2787 or doug@coreconsulting.ws, or send your dates to Jim Mason at jmason@scouting.org

District Pinewood Derby Needs a Race Coordinator

The Great Oaks District Cub Scouts are in need of you in order to have a District Pinewood Derby race this year. The race was originally scheduled for April 23, but recently it was learned the council Pinewood Derby Race was scheduled on this same date. That being said, long-time race coordinator Chad Bryan is not able to organize the race this year because of work commitments prior to original date, nor is UNOH available because of an open house date at the school that same weekend.

Can one of you or a couple of you partner and coordinate a district pinewood derby race on April 16, or April 9, if needed? I listed these dates, as there are some Packs in our district which have races set for first weekends of April. A location will also have to be identified different then the UNOH gym.

Contact Jim Mason ASAP so he can get the word out about this year’s race, at 419.227.2107 or jmason@scouting.org.

Junior Fair Board Representation Needed

The Allen County Junior Fair Board is seeking 1 adult and 1 youth to represent the Boy Scouts on the board for the upcoming year. If you’re interested, please let Jim Mason know at jmason@scouting.org or call 419.227.2107, ext. 124.

BSA Position on Knockerball, BubbleBall, Battle Ball, Zorbing, and Similar Orb Activities

In recent years, we have seen an upswing in the use of all sizes of orbs for everything from rolling down hills, across water, “playing” soccer or football, to outright battles. They were included as an activity at the 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference after a hazard analysis was conducted.

To date, no one in a Scouting setting has been seriously injured in one of these and we prefer to be proactive and cautious in our approach to this activity. Hence, a multidiscipline task force composed of program, marketing, development, legal, risk management, and health and safety professionals and volunteers have evaluated the risks of their use and reviewed their accident history, as well as the positions of various state and federal agencies on their use, and have come to the conclusion that they do not have a part in either the program or as an activity of the Boy Scouts of America or its affiliates.

To that end, the next online revision to the Guide to Safe Scouting will add this as unauthorized activity.

19.  Bubbleball, Knockerball (trade mark), Zorbing, Battle Ball (trademark), bubble soccer or football, and similar orb activities where participants run into each other or roll around on land or water has been reviewed and is now unauthorized.

Please help us communicate this to all participants in Scouting as part of our commitment to their safety.
